Hey there, friends! 🎨 Life can be a bit of a whirlwind, can’t it? One minute we’re sipping our coffee in peace, and the next, it feels like the universe decided to juggle all our plans: and it’s not very good at juggling. We’ve all had those seasons where we feel like we’re just barely "hanging in there."
But sometimes, the most beautiful lessons in resilience come from the most unexpected places. Today, I want to share a story that touched my heart so deeply I just had to pick up my brushes. It’s the story of Punch, a tiny baby monkey with a massive spirit, and how he reminds us that even in the chaos, we can find comfort.
The Story of Punch: A Lesson in Love and Grit 🐾
If you haven’t heard of Punch yet, let me introduce you to this viral symbol of resilience. Punch is a baby Japanese macaque born at the Ichikawa City Zoo. Shortly after he came into the world, he faced a challenge no little one should have to face: he was rejected by his mother and the rest of his troop.
Imagine being that small and feeling that alone. But the zookeepers at Ichikawa City knew that Punch needed more than just food to survive; he needed emotional nourishment. They gave him a simple stuffed orangutan plushie to cling to.
Punch didn’t just like the toy; he needed it. He dragged that plush companion everywhere. It became his "soft space" in a world that felt a little too hard. Seeing photos of this tiny macaque clinging to his orange friend: stubbornly, quietly, and persistently: struck a chord with people all over the world. It wasn’t just cute; it was a testament to the fact that we all need something to hold onto when things get tough.

Finding Our Own "Soft Spaces" 💌
Punch’s story actually mirrors a very famous psychology experiment from the 1950s by Harry Harlow. Back then, people thought babies only bonded with their mothers because of food. Harlow showed that infant monkeys actually preferred a soft, cloth "mother" over a wire one that provided milk.
The takeaway? Love, warmth, and comfort are just as essential for our survival as food and water.
In our busy, often chaotic lives, we sometimes forget to prioritize our own emotional nourishment. We push through the stress, ignore the burnout, and try to be "strong" by going it alone. But Punch shows us that there is a different kind of strength in seeking comfort.
Whether it’s a favorite hobby, a cozy blanket, a walk in the woods, or a piece of art that makes you smile, finding your "stuffed orangutan" is a vital part of staying resilient.

Bringing Punch to Life in the Colorado Studio 🏔️
When I first saw Punch’s little face, I knew I had to capture that expression. There’s a mix of surprise, determination, and pure, unadulterated "hanging in there" in his eyes.
Working from my studio here in Colorado, I wanted to use watercolors to bring out the softness of his fur and the gentle magic of nature. Watercolor is the perfect medium for a story like this: it’s fluid, a little unpredictable, and creates layers of depth that reflect the complexity of our emotions.
Each Punch the Monkey print is a high-quality reproduction of my original watercolor work. I take so much pride in ensuring that the colors are vibrant and the details: from the sparkle in his eyes to the texture of his companion: are perfectly preserved.
Why Art Matters in the Chaos
- A Daily Reminder: Hanging a piece like Punch on your wall serves as a daily nudge to keep going.
- Sensory Joy: There’s something so grounding about the physical experience of art: the texture of the paper, the flow of the paint.
- A Connection to Nature: Even if you're stuck inside an office, a touch of "nature magic" can lower your stress levels and spark a bit of joy.
Hanging In There (Literally!) 🎨
We’ve all been there. Maybe you’re navigating a career change, moving to a new city, or just trying to get through a particularly long Tuesday. Punch is the ultimate mascot for those moments.
He didn’t give up. Slowly but surely, with his plushie by his side, he started to form real connections with other macaques. He learned to self-soothe. He adapted. And that is exactly what resilience looks like. It’s not about being perfect; it’s about dragging your "soft space" with you until the world feels a little safer again.

A Note from Missy VR 🎨
Everything I create in my Colorado studio is designed to bring a bit of warmth into your life. Whether it’s the fine lines of a giraffe’s spots or the wide eyes of a baby skunk, I put so much love into every brushstroke.
I know life is messy. I know it can be overwhelming. But I also know that there is so much beauty to be found when we look for it. Punch found it in a stuffed toy. I find it in the way the sunlight hits the mountains and the way a fresh wash of blue paint looks on a crisp white page.
I hope Punch reminds you to be kind to yourself today. Grab your favorite "plushie" (whatever that looks like for you), take a deep breath, and remember: you’re doing a great job of hanging in there.
